 今年のデトロイトは厳冬だった。元々寒い土地ではあるのだが、この冬は例年以上で、過去6番目の積雪量。
立春を過ぎてからも、寒さと雪はやまず。それからの2週間以内に、2回の猛吹雪。いったい、いつになったら本当の春が来るのやら…と市民に思わせる気候。
それでも、小さな小さな季節の使者は、ゆっくりと、しかし確実にやってくるのだ。太陽の暖かな光を浴びて、木は芽吹き、花々は大地からから顔を覗かせる。
デトロイトで春を感じる風物詩のひとつに、野球チーム、デトロイト・タイガースの開幕試合がある。
今回の開幕戦には、記録的な数の野球ファンが、タイガースの本拠地であるコメリカ・パークに押し寄せたが、11イニング5対4でカンザスシティー・ロイヤルズに負けてしまうという残念な結果に。しかし、華氏60度（摂氏16度）に達するほどの陽気は、ファンを充分に暖めたはず
アメリカ屈指のスポーツタウンであるデトロイトにとって、これからは絶好のシーズン。
先日、全米大学競技協会(NCAA)バスケットボール・トーナメントの一部が、フォード・フィールド（※1）で開催された。このトーナメントはそのレベルの高さと観客を熱狂させる迫力ゆえに、「マーチ・マッドネス」との呼び名も。
この時季になるとこの街のスポーツチームは、チャンピオンシップに向けて全力を注ぐ。
去年、我らがアイスホッケー・チーム、デトロイト・レッドウイングスはウエスタン・カンファレンス、デトロイト・ピストンズはイースタン・カンファレンス、それぞれの決勝まで駒を進めた。 今期も両チームが勝ち進むことを願うばかり！
穏やかな気候が続くのは、通常5月。 芝生と庭の手入れ時！多くの市民は、イースタン・マーケット（※2）で大きな花などが売られるのを待ち、花壇や家庭菜園を作り始める。
さて、5月といえば、北米最大のエレクトロニック・ミュージック・フェスティバルがデトロイトで開催される。最週末になると、テクノミュージシャンやDJを目当てに、ダウンタウンには何千もの人が。毎年、出演者は、海外からも多数。
期待に胸躍るようなラインナップは、すでに発表済み。あなたも、今年はこのフェスティバルに是非！

Spring in Detroit
It had been a hard winter in Detroit. It had the usual cold temperatures of Detroit, but this past winter it was heavier than usual snowfall. It was the 6th highest accumulation of snow in Detroit history.
Even when spring began on March 20th the cold and snow did not stop. Detroit had 2 more big snowstorms within 2 weeks of the beginning of spring. We all wondered when will the real spring begin?
The small, subtle, telltale signs of spring begin to show themselves to us slowly but surely. The small buds of the trees begin to sprout. The first flowers of spring slowly begin to emerge from the earth, waiting for the warm rays of the spring sun.
One sure way to know when spring begins in Detroit is opening day of Detroit Tiger baseball.
This year many people came in record numbers to downtown Detroit to Comerica Park only to see the Tigers lose to the Kansas City Royals, 5 - 4 in 11 innings. But at least the warm spring weather decided to make an appearance and warm the fans up with temperatures almost reaching 60 degrees F.
Detroit is one of the best sports cities in America and springtime is one of the best times for sports.
This spring part of the College Basketball Championship tournament was played at Ford Field in Detroit. It is appropriately called “March Madness” because of the level of intensity and excitement that the games have.
Every spring Detroit sports teams make their yearly run for a chance to win championships.
Our ice hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals last spring. Our basketball team, the Detroit Pistons also made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last spring. We hope this spring they both can go all the way to the finals and win championships for Detroit!
Usually around May the warm weather of Spring comes for good. This is when we get our lawns and gardens ready! Every May we wait for the big flower sale at the Eastern Market in Detroit. Many Detroiters grow beautiful flower and vegetable gardens starting every spring.
Lastly, in May Detroit hosts the largest electronic music festival in North America. The last weekend of May, thousands of people come to downtown Detroit to see many of the original techno musicians and DJs. There are also many techno acts from overseas that come to Detroit to participate in the festival.
This year’s festival lineup has already been announced and it looks like it will be a good one! We hope to see you this year at our festival in Detroit!!
