 毎年、7月4日の祭日（※1）を挟む週末、名店と呼ばれるたくさんのレストランがデトロイト中から参加する「シティー・フェスト」という大規模なフード・フェスティバルが市内のニュー・センター・エリアで開催されます。そこかしこにフード・テントが設立され、バーベキューの炎が美味しい香りを立ち込めさせるのです。
地元のアーティストや国際的アーティストがエンターテインメントを繰り広げるステージでは、バンドのライブやDJを楽しむことができます。
今年のハイライトは、ジョージ・クリントンが率いる世界的人気を博すファンク・バンド、パーラメント・ファンカデリックのライブ、デトロイト・テクノの伝説的人物であり、世界中のミュージシャンに影響を与えるデリック・メイと、彼の愛弟子であるステイシー・パレンのDJでした。
会場を歩いていると、それぞれの人がそれぞれの料理を食べながら素晴らしいエンターテインメントを観賞し、年に一度のイベントを堪能している姿が。そしてステーキやシシカバブを焼くかぐわしい匂い！
アメリカのコニー・アイランド・スタイル（※2）、中華料理、日本食、ギリシア料理、中東料理…シティー・フェストではあらゆる民族の料理を試食できるのです。こんなに多様なものを味わえるデトロイトは、アメリカの中でもっとも豊かな食文化を持つ都市だと断言しても、誰ひとりとして驚かないでしょう！
 フード・テントとエンターテインメント・ステージを過ぎると、ナスカー（※3）のレース車がディスプレイされており、その近くには、最新テクノロジーを駆使したワイドスクリーンテレビを見ることのできる大型トラックブースを、シャープが設置していました。
またストリートでは、フェストへ向かう人々に向けて、エンターテインメントが行われている風景も。カラフルな衣装に身を包み、素晴らしいアフリカの文化を披露していたアフリカ人のドラム奏者とダンサーたち、楽しいショーを繰り広げていたヒップホップ・ブレイク・ダンサーたち。ストリート・エンターテインメントは、シティー・フェストの一味違う素敵な側面を私たちに見せてくれたのです！

CITYFEST
New Center Area - Detroit
July 2nd - 6th
Every year during the 4th of July holiday weekend in the city of Detroit, there is a huge food festival in the New Center area of the city. Many fine restaurants from all over the metropolitan Detroit area take part in this festival. Many food tents are set up and many barbecue fires send a beautiful aroma of fine food to this part of Detroit.
There are also several entertainment stages that feature local and international acts. Many good live bands and DJs are featured. This year's highlights included George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic who is funk band who gains worldwide popularity and DJ's Derrick May and Stacey Pullen. Derrick is the legend of the Detroit techno, and he influences a musician all over the world. Stacey is Derrick's disciple.
Walking around the festival, one can observe the multitudes of people attending this annual event, eating all of the different foods and watching the great entertainment. You can smell the beautiful aroma of barbecuing steaks, and shish kebabs.
Many ethnic cuisines are represented at the Cityfest. American Coney style, Chinese, Japanese, Greek and Middle Eastern cuisines can all be sampled from the various food tents. With this much good food it is no wonder that Detroit is one of the fattest cities in America!
Beyond the food tents and entertainment stages, there was a NASCAR race car on display and SHARP had some of their latest technology such as wide screen TV's and entertainment centers in a large truck booth.
There was also street entertainment that could be seen. Colorful African drummers and dancers put on a wonderful display of African culture. Hip hop break dancers also provided a nice street show for festival onlookers. All in all it was another wonderful Cityfest for the city of Detroit!
